Sun International to drive GrandWest footfall with R600m shopping centre
GrandWest Casino, the biggest casino in South Africa, is adding a R600m shopping centre covering approximately 22,000 m².
Casino operator Sun International is teaming up with shopping centre developer Flanagan & Gerard, ‘to boost its mixed-use leisure and retail offering.’
GrandWest Casino and Western Cape regional director, Mervyn Naidoo, said to MoneyWeb: “The mall will have about 22 000m² of retail space and complement the excellent entertainment offering already available at GrandWest Casino, which includes the gaming area, several restaurants, the ice rink, GrandWest Arena and two hotels in the precinct.”
“Around R600m will be invested in the retail mall component, which will be directly connected to the casino complex. It will be a community-focused centre with around 60 stores and outlets, including two supermarket anchors and two pharmacies in addition to fashion, athleisure, services, health and beauty, banking and new restaurant offerings.”
Paul Gerard, Managing Director of Flanagan & Gerard, added: “GrandWest Mall will be anchored by two supermarkets, in addition to a specialised food store as well as two pharmacies. There will also be fashion, athleisure, services, health and beauty, travel, banking and restaurants.”
Mervyn Naidoo, GM of GrandWest Casino, commented: “GrandWest Mall is going to be an exciting and much-needed retail addition to the complex. It follows our recent R122m expansion of the Grand Hotel from 39 rooms to 103 rooms, which was completed in November 2023.”
“The casino complex already provides a safe environment for family entertainment, and the mall will offer shopping at later hours too, catering for the local community, as many people work during the day and can only shop after working hours.”
