NFL reissues guidance on banned Prop Bets
The NFL has circulated a memo to clubs outlining prohibited proposition wagers following recent federal charges involving integrity breaches in another sport, reiterating the league’s position on limiting high-risk betting markets.
The NFL has reminded players and clubs about restrictions on proposition bets, issuing updated guidance to teams this week. The memo follows federal indictments against two Cleveland Guardians pitchers accused of accepting bribes from bettors to influence prop-bet outcomes.
In the communication, obtained by the Associated Press, the league stated: “We have actively engaged with both state lawmakers and regulators, as well as with our sports betting partners, to limit – and where possible prohibit altogether – prop bets in the NFL. Our commercial agreements are regularly reviewed and updated to prohibit wagers that are tied to the kind of conduct that was identified in recent federal law enforcement activity, and we maintain regular contact with state officials to ensure that these wagers are appropriately addressed.”
The league also reiterated the types of wagers already banned, including:
- Bets considered derogatory, inflammatory, or against public policy, such as those involving player injuries, fan safety, or misconduct.
- Bets based on officials or officiating, including assignments, penalties, or replay decisions.
- Bets on outcomes fully determinable by a single individual on a single play, such as a missed field goal or a quarterback’s first pass being incomplete.
- Predetermined outcomes tied directly to on-field competition, such as whether a quarterback will start or whether a team’s first play will be a run or pass.
