Future tender for Casino St. Moritz won’t be before September 2028
Casino forced to shut in April due to economic struggles
Any retendering of the licence for the shuttered Casino St. Moritz won’t even be considered until 2028 according to an announcement by the Swiss Federal Gaming Commission (SFGB).
The venue was forced to shut at the end of April for economic reasons, which affected 30 employees. Because Casino St. Moritz AG was subsequently unable to present a suitable clientele, it initiated proceedings to withdraw the licence and granted the concessionaire the right to be heard. In August, the SFGB formally revoked the casino licence for the St. Moritz location from the operator of the casino in St. Moritz, Casinos Austria Swiss AG.
The commission said: “The Federal Council has decided to wait with the new tender for the concession that has become vacant. It has instructed the SFGB to draw up recommendations on how to proceed with regard to the concession in the South Grisons zone. The SFGB will do this in the report on the overall evaluation of the casino landscape, which it must prepare by September 2028. This means that the procedure is the same as for the concession in the “Schaffhausen” zone. The Federal Council was unable to grant a licence for these in 2023 because the only applicant had withdrawn from the procedure prematurely.”
