Finance Minister comes out in support of Brazil’s land based gambling bill
Finance Minister Fernando Haddad publicly supported gambling bill PL 2234/23. The support came after a meeting with the bill’s rapporteur in the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ), Senator Irajá.
“All OECD countries, practically, almost all G20 countries, and, looking at the globe, almost all countries, more than 90%, have regulated [gambling],” said the minister in a video released by the lawmaker on social media.
“As long as it is well regulated, well done, moralized, with supervision by the Brazilian State and protection for citizens, it is something that can generate jobs and income in our country,” he added.
Haddad stressed that the ministry’s team proposed some changes to the text. “We made some suggestions for improvement. These are drafting amendments to improve the text that will greatly help to regulate this in Brazil,” he said.
In the caption of the post, Senator Irajá wrote: “It was a very productive dialogue, and Minister Haddad showed support and confidence in the project’s potential. Together, we will work to transform Brazilian tourism into a world power, generating jobs, income, and economic growth. I thank the minister for the suggestions to improve the project and ensure well-structured and safe regulation for our country.”
If approved the bill would allow for the opening of casinos and bingo halls in Brazil, and would legalize the “jogo do bicho” and other forms of gambling as well.
